The third release in this series from Derek Jones, Flute Perspectives 3 continues to convey the synergy of the fascinating and varied Australian classical flute repertoire, with new works Jones has commissioned, some of them being recorded for the for the first time on this album.

In this collection are exciting new works by the very talented Tom Henry, whose compositions are becoming well known, ranging from full orchestral works to smaller chamber, and solo instrumental works. There are also new works from Canadian born Australian resident Linda Verrier, and Melbourne based Johanna Selleck’s Déjà Vu, both taking flute techniques to the edge of the flute's limitations. Rohan Philip’s newly composed Invention V, encapsulates the isolation felt during the covid lockdowns. Rounding out the album Jones swings back to Miriam Hyde’s 1962 Sonata for flute and piano, with the very beautiful and lyrical slow movement - one of Jones’ all time favourites.

Pianist Jerry Wong from the USA, and well known Australian pianist Leigh Harold join Derek on this album. It was recorded at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music’s Ian Potter Southbank Centre between lockdowns, with just enough time to enter the building to complete this third album of “Flute Perspectives” in 2021.

By the waters of Babylon we sat down and wept … As for our harps, we hanged them up upon the trees that are therein. For they that led us away captive required of us then a song, saying “Sing us one of the songs of Sion” … “How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a strange land?”

Many composers have set this heart-wrenching text, telling of the exile of a people from their homeland. JS Bach sets the poem as a solemn hymn, Palestrina as a multi-voiced motet.

The text is no less potent in the 21st century than it was in 500 BCE. The Australian Chamber Choir has commissioned Australian composer, Tom Henry to write a new work on this theme, called Uncertain Journeys.

Catchy Music is a feast of remarkable Australian music from the last ten years.

Pianist Chris Nankervis is joined by clarinettist Tom D’Ath and violinist Nathan Juriansz for Harry Sdraulig’s captivating Evocations, and by drummer Victor Brincat for Michael Kieran Harvey’s hilarious Homage to Liszt. Featuring powerful works by Helen Gifford and Tom Henry (Piano Sonata), and a premiere of Luke Hutton’s new work Incongruence, this recital is not to be missed.

This programme has its origins in Gothic France/Notre Dame of the 11th century and begins with our arrangement of Perotin’s transcendent Viderunt Omnes. The next work, by the ever sinister and haunted Shostakovich, was written in memory of his first wife. It is an extraordinarily complex yet concisely composed quartet; full of familiar Shostakovich motifs, beautiful yet uncomfortable melodies and virtuosic, almost unplayable passages! Yes…almost. The next work on the programme has special significance. It was commissioned by us, and well, it felt like Christmas when we received it! Inspired by the revolutionary English Romantic poet, Percy Shelley this work by Melbourne Composer Tom Henry, is evocative, dramatic, complex, clever but most of all…. simply beautiful. Back to France for Ravel’s highly evocative and sensual quartet in F. Critics at the time described it as “vague, incoherent with weird harmonic eccentricities”. That’s why we love it!
